Data Object project from Year 1 (2016).
The data object represents the percentage of how the total people aged 12+ (males and females) spend their time in contracted time (work/education) in the years 1998/99 and 2009/10. Based on table 7 of the Time Use Survey 2009/10, the average percentage of the total people aged 12+ in 1998/99 spend 17% of their time in contracted time while in 2009/10, people spend 16% of their time in contracted time which is a 1% decrease from the past decade.
The materials used are two button ups that have been halved and joined together. The button up represents the total people aged 12+ (males/females). It also represents contracted time (work/education) as it is a garment that can be worn by males and females for work and school, university or any other learning institution.
The left side of the data object represents 1998/99. It looks old because of the dirty white colour which resembles that year. The right side represents 2009/10 as the fabric looks fairly new and the colour is much cleaner than the other side. This resembles the decade after.
To show the 1% decrease in 2009/10, the right side lacks a button. That is put in the middle to show the change in percentage and make it stand out even though it is subtle. This portrays how the people did not change as much in terms of how they spend their contracted time between the years.
